Urgent need for JobKeeper in Western Sydney

The Hon Scott Morrison MP

Prime Minister

Parliament House

Dear Prime Minister

I write regarding small businesses in my electorate of Greenway, including clear feedback shared this past week during a Small Business Forum I convened.

Specifically, I write to convey the clear message that Western Sydney needs immediate help and that support in the form of JobKeeper should be reinstated as a matter of urgency.

I note with great concern reports today that the lockdown in Sydney is expected to be extended for another four weeks.

The impact of the current lockdown on Western Sydney is worse than the lockdown last year, yet the amount of available Federal Government assistance is less. This is a perverse situation that threatens to devastate livelihoods and undermine economic recovery.

Local small businesses report that there is a disconnect between what the Government thinks is needed and what is happening on the ground. A range of small businesses, including retailers and service providers, are finding it harder to qualify for assistance and the red tape onerous.

Labor has advocated for consistent support for small business and workers through JobKeeper.

Without adequate support, many jobs will be unnecessarily lost and small businesses could be forced to shut down permanently. At this stage of Australia’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, urgent action is needed to reduce the impact of the current Sydney lockdown, particularly in Western Sydney.

I urge to you to reinstate a wage subsidy scheme such as JobKeeper to support livelihoods in Western Sydney and offer the support needed to supported workers and businesses through this latest lockdown.

Yours sincerely

Michelle Rowland MP
