ABBOTT ATTACKS COMMUNITY GROUPS WITH CRUEL CUTS

12 December 2013

The Abbott Government has cruelly cut fully-budgeted and approved grants awarded to not-for-profit groups, charities, local government organisations and volunteer organisations around the country.

Shadow Minister for Citizenship and Multiculturalism, Michelle Rowland, said the Abbott Government’s decision to cut the Building Multicultural Communities Program was a disgrace.

Many community organisations received letters today stating the Abbott Government has withdrawn funding for their previously successful grants.

“Tony Abbott and Kevin Andrews have cruelly cut grants to organisations in our community, many who work with those less fortunate, in order to maintain cohesive and socially inclusive neighbourhoods,” Ms Rowland said.

“This decision is a calculated move by the Abbott Government which betrays community groups around the country on the verge of Christmas.

“It is symptomatic of a government that knows the cost of everything and the value of nothing.

“The best way that governments can help build inclusive, harmonious communities is from the bottom-up, by supporting grass-roots programs like this.

“This decision to cut the Building Multicultural Communities Program calls into question the Abbott Government’s commitment to multiculturalism in Australia.

“Minister Andrews should front up and explain to these community organisations throughout Australia why he is ripping away their funding,” Ms Rowland said.
