-ABBOTT ATTACKS LOGAN CITY WITH CRUEL CUTS

Shadow Minister for Citizenship and Multiculturalism, Michelle Rowland and Member for Rankin, Jim Chalmers have today met with communities in Logan who have been impacted by the Abbott Government’s cuts to multicultural funding.

Organisations impacted include Access Community Services which has had their fully budgeted grant of over $146,000 cut, and Rodelu Woodridge Uruguay Sports and Social Club lost almost $45,000.

Ms Rowland said the Abbott Government’s decision to rip $11.5 million from the Building Multicultural Communities Program was a disgrace and would have an adverse impact on the community.

“Tony Abbott and Kevin Andrews have callously cut grants to organisations that work to maintain cohesive and socially inclusive neighborhoods in the very diverse region of Logan and regions right around the country,” Ms Rowland said.

“The best way that governments can help build inclusive, harmonious communities is from the bottom up, by supporting grassroots programs like this.”

Dr Chalmers said he was disappointed that these organisations have had their approved funding snatched away by the Abbott Government.

“It’s very disappointing that the Abbott Government has cut funding to our local multicultural community groups who do so much in our area,” Dr Chalmers said.

“I call on the Abbott Government to release the funds that have been approved for organisations in the local community to let them continue doing the great work they do.”

Ms Rowland also encouraged the community to send Tony Abbott a message about his cuts to multicultural organisations by visiting www.ISupportCommunities.com

Funding cut from Rankin:

Access Community Services – $146,556

Queensland Police-Citizens Youth Welfare Association – $106,990

Salvation Army Property Trust at Calamvale Corps – $20,000

Islamic Women’s Association of Queensland Inc – $20,545

Rodelu Woodridge Uruguay Sports and Social Club – $44,981
