COMMUNITY GROUPS BEAR THE BRUNT OF CRUEL COALITION CUTS

03 January 2014

Reports in today’s Age newspaper have shed light on the cruelty of the Coalition’s cuts to the Building Multicultural Communities Program.

The Jewish Holocaust Centre in Melbourne is just one of 400 organisations around the country who have had funding ripped away by the Abbott Government.

“The Jewish Holocaust Centre provides a vitally important educational service to the community and the Abbott Government has cruelly ripped funding from them,” the Shadow Minister for Citizenship and Multiculturalism, Michelle Rowland said.

“As reported today the centre is run by dedicated volunteers, including Holocaust survivors, and operates on a small budget.

“The centre went through a competitive grants process and was awarded $7700 which has now been cut by Tony Abbott and Kevin Andrews.”

This is just one organisation out of 400 that is feeling the pain of the Coalition’s $11.5 million cut to the Building Multicultural Communities Program.

“The decision to cut this program is symptomatic of a government that knows the cost of everything and the value of nothing.”
