The release of the NBN Corporate Plan today shows that not even Mitch Fifield can fix Malcolm Turnbull’s second-rate, copper NBN.

Today’s Corporate Plan confirms that every assumption Mr Turnbull made when he was Minister responsible for the NBN was wrong.

It confirms Malcolm Turnbull has stuffed up the NBN:

• The cost of his second-rate NBN has nearly doubled.
• The time it will take to build has more than doubled.

• The choice of technology will not provide Australians with a future-proof 21st Century broadband network.

We’ve seen stuff up after stuff up from Mr Turnbull.  His stuff up of the NBN is his worst yet.

In 2013 Malcolm Turnbull labelled his NBN as fast, affordable, sooner.

But every assumption which he used to justify his shift from Labor’s superior fibre-based network to his inferior Multi-technology Mix has been proven wrong. He was wrong on cost, wrong on timing, wrong on technology.

Fibre-to-the-Premises build has flatlined. NBN Co has back-flipped on the use of Pay TV cable and will now build more Fibre-to-the-Node. As soon as it is completed, the nation will need to reinvest in the upgrade to fibre.

Malcolm Turnbull promised he could build a second rate copper NBN for $29.5 billion but it is now costing up to $54 billion. This means Turnbull’s NBN has blowout by $24.5 billion.

Malcolm Turnbull promised all Australians they would have access to minimum speeds on the NBN by this year.  That timing has blown out to 2020.  Today’s Corporate Plan states that it will only be by June next year that nearly half of Australia will even be able to order a service.

The lived experience of consumers also shows deep dissatisfaction with Malcolm Turnbull’s second rate NBN including for connection times, fault rectification, quality and actual speeds that don’t match promises.

Today the Communications Minister today supposedly described the NBN as the greatest turnaround in Australian corporate history. In fact the greatest turnaround has been that under Malcolm Turnbull’s watch, Australia’s internet speeds dropped from 30th in the world to 60th.

Under Malcolm Turnbull’s second-rate NBN, Australians are not getting the NBN they need or deserve to compete with the rest of the world.  

All Malcolm Turnbull is offering Australians is a slower, second-rate copper NBN.
