Critical parts of the economy propped up by small business are wondering: where is the plan? 

In the latest Dun and Bradsheet Business Expectations Survey, key small business sectors, such as retail and services, have seen a large drop off in future expectations.

It isn’t difficult to see why small businesses are souring. A Government without a plan, a Prime Minister who does policy by thought bubble and a Treasurer who is out of the loop.

As I chat to small businesses, from Parramatta to Far North Queensland, I hear a very similar messages. Small businesses want certainty and they want confidence.

Unfortunately for the small businesses of Australia, there is lots of talk at the moment but very little action.

There are big issues to address. Fundamental to the Australian notion of a fair go is getting paid for completed work.

Without prompt payment, cash flow can become unmanageable. This is particularly concerning in industries dominated by large projects, such as commercial construction.

I will continue to inform Labor’s policies by talking to small business owners, operators and employees.

Labor’s recent Access to Justice for Small Business policy will allow small businesses to confront anti-competitive behaviour without adding onerous new red tape to the Competition and Consumer Act.
