I congratulate the new President of Sri Lanka, Maithripala Sirisena, on his recent electoral victory.

I am privileged to represent many constituents from a Sri Lankan background, including many Sinhalese and Tamil people.

Federal Labor looks forward to working with the new President on strengthening the links between our two nations.

Labor continues to support reconciliation for the people of Sri Lanka.

Along with many of my constituents, I share the great hope that under President Sirisena true reconciliation will be achieved.

I am very pleased the recent election in Sri Lanka was carried out peacefully and transparently, as noted by the UN.

I also acknowledge the efforts of the Australian Tamil Congress in encouraging democratic participation.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all my Tamil and Sinhalese constituents a happy and prosperous New Year.
