Dutton isolated on world-leading mobile reform

26 February 2025

The Albanese Government’s commitment to a Universal Outdoor Mobile Obligation (UOMO) has been widely welcomed by stakeholders including:

  • The Australian Communications Consumer Action Network (ACCAN)
  • National Farmers’ Federation
  • Regional Telecommunications Independent Review Committee
  • NSW Rural Fire Service
  • Better Internet for Rural, Regional & Remote (BIRRR)
  • Optus and TPG
  • First Nations Digital Inclusion Advisory Group; and
  • A growing number of regional councils

Yet the Liberal-National Shadow Cabinet is bitter and opposed, and awash with contradictions across Nationals in their caucus.

Labor is crystal clear on why mobile access is essential during emergencies, and the vital public safety benefits UOMO will provide during bushfires and floods.

The nonsensical opposition of Dutton and his Shadow Minister presents a risk to regional and disaster-prone communities.

The Albanese Government will not leave Australians to fend for themselves when it comes to public safety connectivity.

We will support them as best we can – and that is why UOMO will be the top communications legislative priority for a re-elected Labor Government in 2025.
