LABOR WELCOMES THE REOPENING OF QUAKERS HILL NURSING HOME
The Federal Labor Opposition has welcomed the reopening of the $20 million Quakers Hill Nursing Home this morning.
“Today’s reopening provides a new, hope-filled chapter for the Quakers Hill community,” Shadow Minister for Ageing Shayne Neumann said at today’s event.
“Out of the ashes of the tragic fire of November 2011 rises this wonderful facility, providing security, dignity and world class care for the residents.
“The tragic loss of life following the fire is a reminder of how vulnerable our elderly community members are and the importance of providing safe environments for them.
“As a result of this event there has been an overhaul in fire safety regulations in nursing homes and as a result sprinklers are being installed in nursing homes in NSW and indeed around the country.
“I congratulate Domain Principal Group, which has worked hard to create a world class facility which meets the needs of its residents now and into the future,” Mr Neumann said.
Federal Member for Greenway, Michelle Rowland recognised the courage and support of the wider community over the past two and a half years.
“This is an important moment for our community which collectively grieved and is now proud to see a new chapter for this facility.
“In particular I acknowledge Minister Geoff Bates of the Quakers Hill Anglican Church, who during and following the fire, provided a triage area and safe zone for family and staff. He was true shepherd for all our community,” Ms Rowland said.
The new $20 million Quakers Hill Nursing Home comprises 79 single rooms, 24 companion rooms and a purpose built and designed dementia wing, allowing for up 127 residents. In addition it features a memorial garden as a reminder of the impact the Quakers Hill fire had on individuals, families and the community at large.
“Today is a significant moment in the history of Quakers Hill Nursing Home. While the physical infrastructure has been mended, the psychological scars will always be raw.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the community on this emotional day,” Ms Rowland said.
