LABOR TO CONTINUE TO DELIVER CRITICAL WESTERN SYDNEY INFRASTRUCTURE
Labor is building Western Sydney’s future, today announcing a re-elected Albanese Government will commit $200 million for the upgrade of Windsor Road in Rouse Hill and another $20 million to plan for future upgrades along Old Windsor Road, to alleviate congestion in this growing area.
The Hills Shire, Blacktown and Hawkesbury areas are booming and key arterial roads are coming to a standstill during peak hours.
Our $200 million election commitment for Windsor Road will go towards:
- widening Windsor Road between Mile End Road and Commercial Road to three lanes plus a bus lane in each direction;
- upgrading the Windsor Road and Commercial Road, Windsor Road and Mile End Road, and Commercial Road and Caddies Boulevard intersections;
- constructing a shared path on the eastern side of Windsor Road;
- delivering new and upgraded bus infrastructure with dedicated bus lanes along Windsor Road between the existing T-way and Mile End Road.
These upgrades will support the significant population growth that is expected to continue in the area and also support access to the new Rouse Hill Hospital.
Our planning study funding of $20 million will investigate options to reduce travel times on Old Windsor Road from Kellyville to Northmead, with a particular focus on the section between Windsor Road and Norwest Boulevard.
This planning work will consider options to upgrade and widen the road corridor to help ease congestion and support the growing number of residents in this region.
This comes on top of our other recent major infrastructure commitments in Western Sydney, including:
- $1 billion to preserve the rail corridor for a future extension from Bradfield to Leppington and Macarthur;
- $500 million to upgrade Fifteenth Avenue, to create a critical transit corridor from Liverpool to the new airport;
- $580 million for upgrades to Townson Road and Burdekin Road, and Garfield Road West.
- $500 million for Mamre Road Stage 2 Upgrade; and
- $400 million for priority upgrades on Elizabeth Drive.
Comments attributable to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese:
“Only Labor has a plan to build Western Sydney’s future.
“Windsor Road is so packed it becomes a carpark at peak hour.
“We will deliver $200 million to upgrade this section of road to ease congestion and improve safety, and $20 million to plan for upgrades on Old Windsor Road.
“This is all part of our plan to build Australia’s future - connecting people with the jobs of the future, and with each other.”
Comments attributable to Minister for Infrastructure Catherine King:
“For too long, the Coalition Government let Western Sydney develop without funding the infrastructure required to support its growth.
“We’re picking up their slack – investing $19 billion over the next ten years to provide the roads, rail and air connections it needs to be a well-functioning city.
“We’re fixing Windsor Road now and starting the work to fix Old Windsor Road in the future to cut down commutes for current and future residents.”
Comments attributable to Minister Michelle Rowland, Member for Greenway:
“Our investment in Old Windsor Road is a vital upgrade to a critical pinchpoint in this major arterial road - reducing travel times and improving access to Rouse Hill Hospital.
“This is another example of Federal and State Labor Governments working to deliver for the North-West, after a decade of sheer indifference by the Liberals.
“We are working to make sure motorists in Western Sydney spend less time on the road and more time with their families.”
Comments from Dilvan Bircan, Labor Candidate for Mitchell:
“This is a critical investment that will make a world of difference for growing community that we have here in the Hills and surrounds that drive on these roads every day.
“The upgrades will ensure that our roads are fit for purpose so that people can get where they need to quickly and safely.
“‘Whether you drive on Windsor Road to get to school, use the T-Way to get to work, or ride a bike down to visit the beautiful tracks in Baulkham Hills, these upgrades will help get you where you need to go.
“Only a Labor Government will deliver the infrastructure that the people of Western Sydney need.”
