SPEECH - DIWALI 2019 - HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES - 23 OCTOBER 2019

23 October 2019

DELIVERED IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

In the generous spirit of Diwali, I also say: namaste, kam cho, vannakam and sasriyakal. I rise to extend my best wishes to all celebrating the occasion of Diwali, which falls on this Sunday, 27 October.

As the Member for Greenway, I have the great privilege of representing vibrant and generous Sikh, Hindu and Jain communities in my electorate—and Diwali is one of my favourite festivals of the year. During this time, Greenway is lit up in a wonderful display of optimism, hope and renewal.

The warm glow of the diya across homes, businesses, temples and gurudwaras gives pause for reflection on the year that's passed and an opportunity to look forward to the future.

During Diwali, people are encouraged to take stock of their riches—be they material or spiritual—and hope for a prosperous year ahead. It is also an opportunity to give and forgive. There is spiritual and emotional renewal during Diwali, as the light of the diya washes away past grievances. Diwali is a celebration of the spirit of community, love and respect, and these, too, are enduring Australian values.

Diwali has become a core part of my community's cultural fabric.

I wish all those celebrating Diwali a bright and prosperous festival of lights. May this Diwali bring peace and happiness to you and your loved ones.
